Selecting a Doctor

Finding the right surgeon for you can be challenging. Recommendations from family and friends or referrals from other physicians are a useful way to start the selection process.  The internet provides an easy way to refine your prospective list by evaluating the surgeon’s credentials, area of expertise, and perhaps most importantly a before and after gallery. The following are a few objective measures to consider when selecting a surgeon for your upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or eyebrow surgery.

  • Is the surgeon fellowship trained in Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery? This subspecialty combines ophthalmology with plastic surgery and is focused exclusively on eyelids, eyebrows, and upper facial surgery.

  • Is the surgeon Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and qualified to care for the eyes himself or herself?

  • Is the surgeon a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS)? Membership in this selective society requires both Board Certification by the ABO and intensive fellowship training in oculofacial plastic surgery.

  • Does the surgeon perform exclusively eyelid, eyebrow, and upper facial procedures or are these procedures only a small percentage of his/her practice?

  • Has the surgeon performed thousands of procedures on the eyelids and eyebrows?

  • Does the surgeon’s practice involve both routine cases as well as complex or revisional surgery?

  • Do other doctors and hospital staff select this surgeon for their own surgery?
